Texas Christian
University provides workers' compensation insurance as a
benefit to TCU employees and student workers. This coverage
is totally separate from the major medical health insurance
coverage that is available to employees who qualify.
Workers' Compensation benefits and guidelines are set by
state law. Any questions regarding employee rights can be
answered by the Texas Department of Insurance - Workers'
Compensation program at 1-800-252-3439 or by contacting the TCU
Workers' Compensation Coordinator at 257-7778.
For further
information, contact the TDI - WC website at:
TDI - Workers'
Compensation
To expedite the
processing of injury report forms to the Workers'
Compensation Commission, the following procedures must be
followed:
Treatment of
On-The-Job Injuries
-
Medical attention
should be given to the injured employee in accordance
with the severity of the injury by:
-
Determining the
need for first aid treatment.
-
Calling for an
ambulance if required by the severity of the injury.
(Should an ambulance be called, any decision on
which hospital is to be chosen for emergency
treatment is to be left to the injured employee
and/or emergency personnel.)
-
DO NOT take the
injured employee to the Health Center for treatment
(Student workers may seek treatment at the Health
Center after contacting the Workers' Comp.
Coordinator).
-
Arrangements for
non-emergency medical treatment of an injured employee
will be made by contacting the Workers' Compensation
Coordinator (ext. 7778, Secrest-Wible Bdlg, Rm 115) at the
time of injury.
-
Non-emergency
injuries occurring after 5:00 p.m. or on weekends will
be directed to Harris Main Emergency Room - 882-3333,
1301 Pennsylvania Ave. (24-hour) - unless another site
is selected by the injured employee.
Reporting
Employee Injuries
-
All employees are
instructed to report all on-the-job injuries immediately
and directly to their supervisor.
-
The supervisor must
notify the WC Coordinator (x7778) at the earliest
possible time after the injury is reported. Injuries
occurring outside of normal working hours should be
reported to Campus Police (x7777). The caller should
inform the dispatcher that the injury is work related an
the WC Coordinator should be contacted.
Return To Work
Texas Christian
University provides a modified duty program for the
management of work-related injuries. Modified duty is based
on the medical restrictions given to the injured employee
after each doctor's visit. Since these are medical
judgments, these restrictions are given only by the treating
physician, not TCU personnel. The following procedures
should be followed:
-
When an employee
returns with no restrictions, the treating physician's
medical release is to be carried to the WC Coordinator's
office. Additionally, a phone call should be made to the
WC Coordinator by the supervisor at the time of return.
-
When restrictions are
placed on the employee's physical activities by the
treating physician, every effort will be made to return
the injured employee to work on a temporary
modified duty status. In order to provide the
appropriate modified duty guidelines the following must
be followed:
-
A medical
evaluation by the treating physician.
-
A Modified-Duty
Agreement must be signed by the injured employee,
appropriate supervisor(s), and the WC Coordinator
before the injured employee returns to work.
Forms To Be
Completed
-
A
Personal Injury
Report (PIR) must be completed and delivered to the
Workers' Compensation office (Secrest-Wible Bdlg, Room
115) within
24 hours of the telephone call. The PIR form is
available through the WC Coordinator's office or can be
linked to through the
Downloadable Forms
webpage of this site.
-
Only the injured
employee is to fill out the Employee's On-the-Job Injury
Report. The employee should use whichever language
he/she chooses. This report must not be filled out by
the supervisor or a co-worker. This form is available
through the WC Coordinator's office or can be linked to
through the
Downloadable Forms webpage of this site.
-
For an employee to
report back to work, a Return-to-Work Evaluation form
must be completed by the treating physician for the
injured employee. A new form is to be completed at each
doctor's visit and then returned to the WC Coordinator.
In many cases, the physician or clinic will have their
own forms. The WC Coordinator should be contacted,
particularly at the initial visit, to ensure that an
appropriate form is completed.
-
TCU utilizes a
Modified Duty Agreement as a means to inform the
appropriate parties of any physical restrictions issued
by the treating physician. These restrictions are used
to assist in modifying an injured employee's job duties
during the time of treatment.
