Identification, Notification, and Evacuation

A. Identification/Notification

  1. In the event of fire or smoke, immediately activate the building fire alarm system to evacuate the building. Even if the fire is small, the alarm should be activated immediately since the fire could grow very quickly. All building occupants should be familiar with fire alarm pull station locations.

  2. After activating the alarm system and moving to a safe location, 911 should be called. Be prepared to provide the emergency dispatcher with name and location of the building and information concerning the fire.

  3. After activating the alarm and calling 911, an attempt to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher may be attempted if the fire can be extinguished without endangering oneself. Otherwise, evacuate the building and report the exact location and other pertinent information to officials.

B. Evacuation

  1. The primary concern in the event of a fire is the safe evacuation of persons in the building. In order to accomplish this, all occupants must prepare in advance for a quick and orderly evacuation. All occupants should know primary and secondary evacuation routes. Periodic drills and/or meetings should be held to review these procedures. When the fire alarm sounds, immediate evacuation is required.

  2. When evacuating the building, make sure to turn off any ventilating equipment, leave the room lights on, and close the door behind you as you leave.

  3. Once outside, move a reasonable distance away from the building and remain outside until advised by police or fire officials to re-enter the building. NEVER ATTEMPT TO RE-ENTER A BURNING BUILDING.

  4. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS. Elevators do not provide safe means of exiting during fire emergencies.

Notification and Evacuation Procedures

The Risk Management Department will assist departments in developing evacuation procedures and alternative emergency escape routes to be utilized by building occupants in the event of a fire or other emergency requiring building evacuation. This information should be posted in conspicuous locations throughout each facility for easy reference by building occupants. The evacuation plan should be practiced periodically during fire drills.
